The therapeutic value of horseback riding for people with disabilities has been understood for nearly as long as horses have been part of human civilization. In the mid-20th Century, as horses became more of a luxury than a necessity, centers offering riding programs began to serve the needs of people of all ages and a wide range of conditions.

More recently, equine assisted learning and equine facilitated psychotherapy (to use only two of many names) has become a sister field to therapeutic riding. Mental health counselors and therapists, life coaches, leadership development professionals, and many more have discovered the power of working with horses to support their human clients/patients in making lasting changes in their lives.

The primary professional organizations in North America are PATH International (formerly NARHA), EAGALA, and EFW-CAN.
